Protecting The Oral Microbiome: Gut Health and Oral Health Recognising the Balance Between Health and Disease.

It is now well established that the oral microbiome plays a critical role in the health status of not only the oral cavity but other body sites away from the mouth. A transition from a healthy oral microbiome to a pathogenic microbiome causes an imbalance of oral homeostasis known as dysbiosis, which is an important concept to understand most oral diseases. In this presentation ,we will explore the current knowledge surrounding the function that oral microbes play in health and disease and how maintaining a healthy and varied microbiome supports both oral and systemic health.

Aim and Learning Objectives
This presentation will:
•    Discuss the importance of the human microbiome and its’ influence on health and well-being.
•    Review the function of oral microbes in health and disease.
•    Examine the role of the oral microbiome in systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammatory diseases.
•    Consider treatment options that protect the oral microbiome.

Learning Outcomes
Following this presentation the delegate will be able to:
•    Describe the role the oral microbiome plays in health and disease.
•    Identify factors that contribute to dysbiosis and inflammatory diseases.
•    Choose treatments that protect and support a healthy microbiome.

Title: Oral Health and the Female Lifecycle: Adolescence.

Date: March 2025

Intro: There are five stages in a women’s life during which changes in hormone levels make them more susceptible to oral health problems – puberty, the monthly menstruation cycle, when using oral contraceptives, during pregnancy and at menopause. Each of these phases involve fluctuating levels of sex hormones that have direct and indirect effects on oral health and may also influence susceptibility to periodontal disease.

This presentation aims to discuss how fluctuating levels of female hormones during adolescence and the menstrual cycle can impact the periodontium.

Learning Content:

  • To provide an overview of the female hormones and their actions through puberty and the menstrual cycle.

  • To discuss the potential effect of hormones on the periodontal health of female patients.

  • To examine oral conditions associated with female hormone status throughpuberty and the menstrual cycle.

  • To provide treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the female life cycle.

Learning Outcomes:

Following this presentation delegates will be able to:

  • Classify the different female hormones and their actions throughout puberty and the menstrual cycle.

  • Describe the effects of female hormones on oral health associated with puberty and the menstrual cycle.

  • Diagnose oral conditions associated with female hormone status.

  • Identify treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the female life cycle.

Title: Oral Health and the Female Lifecycle: Contraception and Pregnancy.

Date: April 2025

Intro: Early studies on the effect of oral contraceptives on the periodontium have shown increased gingival inflammation in women taking oral contraceptives. Pregnancy is also a critical time in a woman’s life when oral health is of fundamental importance. Identifying the effect of female hormone fluctuations on the periodontium during hormone-based contraceptive use and pregnancy is important in both female life stages to ensure stable periodontal health.

This presentation aims to discuss how fluctuating levels of female hormones during hormone-based contraceptive use and pregnancy can impact the periodontium.

Learning Content:

  • To provide an overview of the female hormones and their actions during hormone-based contraception use and pregnancy.

  • To discuss the potential effect of hormones on the periodontal health of female patients.

  • To examine oral conditions associated with female hormone status during hormone-based contraception use and pregnancy.

  • To provide treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the female life cycle.

Learning Outcomes:

Following this presentation delegates will be able to:

  • Classify the different female hormones and their actions during hormone-based contraception use and pregnancy.

  • Describe the effects of female hormones on oral health associated with hormone-based contraception use and pregnancy.

  • Diagnose oral conditions associated with female hormone status.

  • Identify treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the female life cycle.

Title: Oral Health and the Female Lifecycle: Menopause and Beyond.

 Date: May 2025

Intro: Throughout the reproductive life cycle of women, fluctuating levels of sex hormones have direct and indirect effects on oral health, influencing susceptibility to periodontal disease. During the menopause female hormone deficiency can impact the periodontium and oral tissues, increasing the risk of periodontal disease and other oral conditions.

It is imperative that the dental team understand the effect of hormone status on the oral health of our female patients and recognise our role in the promotion of oral systemic health and its impact on the health of women.

This presentation aims to provide an overview of the female hormones and how hormone status can impact on the oral health of our female patients through the menopause and beyond.

Learning Content:

  • To provide an overview of the female hormones and their actions throughout the menopause and beyond.

  • To discuss the potential effect of hormones on the periodontal tissues during perimenopause and menopause.

  • To examine oral conditions associated with female hormone status through the menopause and post menopause.

  • To provide treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the menopause.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Following this presentation delegates will be able to

  • Classify the different female hormones and their actions throughout the female life cycle.

  • Describe the effects of female hormones on oral health associated with the menopause.

  • Diagnose oral conditions associated with female hormone status.

  • Identify treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the menopause.
